It is a place where the country\u2019s manufacturing capabilities took form, supported by the infrastructure that lines the Yellow Sea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid1990s, this site became home to a technology that reshaped the steel world: thin slab casting and rolling, or TSCR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TSCR: a shift in how steel could be made<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades,\u00a0flatrolled\u00a0steel production followed a predictable pattern: casting thick slabs, reheating, and rolling in\u00a0energy-intensive\u00a0mills. TSCR disrupted that logic by integrating casting and rolling into a single, continuous process. The idea was simple but transformative:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>less energy&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>less footprint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>less capital cost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a faster route from liquid steel to finished strip<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The breakthrough that made TSCR&nbsp;possible&nbsp;came in 1985, when SMS cast the first&nbsp;50mm&nbsp;thin slab in a pilot plant \u2014 a milestone that paved the way for CSP\u2019s industrial debut in 1989. CSP became the first successful industrial application of TSCR, and over time the broader TSCR family expanded into several variants \u2014 CSP, ISP, ESP, QSP, DUE, etc. \u2014 each refining the concept in its own way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-1024x300.jpg\" alt=\"Compact Strip Plant Hyundai Steel Dangjin\" class=\"wp-image-162665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-1024x300.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-768x225.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-1536x450.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/hilcoindustrial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/CSP-Schematic-Diagram-2048x599.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The CSP line at Hyundai Steel&nbsp;Dangjin&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1995<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Commissioned by Hanbo Steel, with the first coil produced in June as SMS Group\u2019s fifth global CSP reference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2004<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 &nbsp;HANBO was acquired&nbsp;by Hyundai Steel&nbsp;and the CSP Line was&nbsp;modernized for reliable, high\u2011quality production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2011<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Major revamp with new electrical and automation systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2020<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Mothballed in June after 25 years of consistent operation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CSP and the opening of new markets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSP \u2014 and TSCR more broadly \u2014 changed the competitive landscape of&nbsp;flatrolled&nbsp;steel:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>minimills&nbsp;could enter markets once dominated by integrated producers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>energy consumption dropped dramatically&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plant footprints shrank&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduced capex and&nbsp;opex&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dangjin\u2019s&nbsp;CSP line was part of this shift,&nbsp;demonstrating&nbsp;that&nbsp;thinslab&nbsp;technology could thrive in Korea\u2019s demanding industrial environment and contribute to the country\u2019s rapid industrial growth.
